3,000 Tons Household Waste Collected and Garage Manage Well During May Day Holidays

In order to ensure that all citizens have a clean, refreshing and tidy Labor Day, the sanitation management staff in Ningbo stick to their posts, and all domestic waste disposal facilities and transfer stations operate normally. During the 5-day holiday, a total of 65,200 tons of garbage were collected and disposed, including 34,800 tons in the central urban area. The total amount of garbage in the city increased by 5.47% compared to the same period last year.

According to statistics, a total of 7.954 million tourists flooded into Ningbo during the Labour holidays (hereinafter to be referred as the Holidays), an increase of 10.5% than last year. A large number of people from other cities and provinces chose to travel to Ningbo, which led to a significant increase in the amount of garbage. Thanks to the concerted efforts of waste management workers, garbage classification supervisors, and garbage collection and disposal personnel across the city, public toilets on urban roads were cleaned normally during the Holidays, and household garbage was collected and disposed of normally, successfully ensuring that citizens had a green and lively holiday.

“During the Holidays, many residents in our community went on trips, so the amount of garbage thrown out was relatively less,” said Li, a supervisor at the Rose Garden Community in Weidou, Beilun District. “Many residents got up late and missed the garbage collection time. Fortunately, a ‘24-hour Garage Collection Place’ was deliberately set up  before the holiday to serve for residents who missed the collection time. Moreover, every residents did a good job in garbage classification, and garbage bags in the community were almost gone.”

During the Holidays, as a lot more customers visited Yinxiangcheng CBD in Yinzhou Administrative District than usual, the amount of garbage collected was 2.3 times that of a normal day. 18 groups of cleaning staff were specially arranged at the area with many restaurants by the Sanitation Department of Yinzhou Administrative District, moreover, a staggered working mechanism has been established to conduct patrols to ensure that the garbage could be timely dealt with. Sun Guiying, a sanitation worker responsible for the area’s cleaning, said, “I start work at 4 o'clock every day to ensure that the first sweep is completed before 7 o'clock."

During the Holidays, to ensure environmental protection, Ningbo Environment Sanitation Management Departments comprehensively optimized various guarantee measures, conducting thorough cleaning (including scrubbing) around commercial streets and tourist attractions in advance, focusing on solving problems such as oil stains, dirt, and accumulated sand and mud on urban roads to restore their original appearance. During the Holidays, the frequency of inspections and emptying trash cans have been increased to promptly clear visible garbage on the roads and prevent overflows from trash cans, thereby providing a cleaner, more comfortable, and higher-quality urban environment for citizens and tourists.
In addition, to make sure that all citizens and tourists can enjoy themselves in Ningbo, “All public toilets in the city's central urban area are open 24 hours. High-standard daily cleaning measures such as the ‘tracking cleaning method’ were taken and maintenance work on facilities were carried out in advance to ensure that all equipment are in good condition and the environment is clean, so as to provide citizens and tourists with a comfortable and convenient toilet experience,” said a head in charge of Ningbo Sanitation and Environmental Hygiene Guidance Center.
Now, as citizens are coming back to work from the Holidays, all sanitation management units will continue to do a good job in regular cleaning to keep the city clean and tidy.
